Pioneer Memorial sets $4.7M expansion

At a time when industry studies are showing more rural hospitals are at risk of closing, Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg is expanding.

The hospital is a non-profit 12-bed critical access hospital. It’s part of a multi-service campus that provides outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy as well as a nursing home and other services.

Pioneer breaks ground Thursday on a $4.7 million construction and renovation project that will expand PT and OT therapy areas, add two bays to the emergency room, and create a new cardiac rehabilitation and stress testing area.

“We’ve been looking at our long-term growth within the organization,” said chief executive officer Isaac Geerdes. “We’ve seen some massive growth with outpatient therapy in particular, our physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
