Notable construction projects around the region

The 2026 construction season is in full swing. Companies are busy working on projects that include additions, renovations and new builds across the region. Major North Dakota construction projects include the groundbreaking of a nearly $4 billion, 1.6 gigawatt natural gas power plant in Williams County, major flood protection efforts in Minot and significant road repairs across the state.

Four large water projects are underway in South Dakota, including a $150 million expansion of the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System. Major projects in Sioux Falls include healthcare expansions, industrial growth and mixed-use developments. Big highway projects include Highway 50 reconstruction in Tyndall and U.S. Highway 385 renovations.

Minnesota’s commercial construction sector is driven by data center development, major airport expansions and significant mixed-use projects. Data centers are the fastest-growing sector, with Meta continuing its investment near Rosemount. MnDOT is managing more than 200 road and bridge projects, and a Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame will be built in Inver Grove Heights.

Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the Sanford Health Orthopedic Hospital Expansion and Highpoint Hotel project represents a significant development in regional healthcare and hospitality. This ambitious project, encompassing 161,000 square feet of new construction and 44,000 square feet of remodeled space, began in June 2022 and was completed in December 2025. The hotel offers 56 guest rooms, providing visitors with views from one of the highest vantage points in Sioux Falls.
