As construction crews put the finishing touches on the new Sanford Orthopedic Hospital, the care team at Sanford Health is preparing to welcome patients to the new facility.
When it opens in January, Sanford Orthopedic Hospital will give residents of the Sioux Falls region access to an unparalleled patient experience. Through its new capabilities and amenities, this facility will make a positive impact on the community for decades to come.
Dr. Jared Daniel, an orthopedic surgeon, said the new orthopedic hospital is a much-needed addition to Sanford Health’s main campus.
“Our team has grown over the last several years, so there’s a need for more operating rooms,” Daniel said. “With this new facility, our orthopedic surgeons will have access to ORs that are solely dedicated to orthopedics and its related specialties.”
In addition to more operating rooms, Sanford Orthopedic Hospital has an intraoperative MRI – the first one in the state. Dr. Kristofer Kimber, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, said this machine will offer a high level of precision for complicated surgeries.
“One subspecialty that will really benefit from the iMRI is neurosurgery as they will be able to identify critical locations during surgeries with a high level of accuracy,” Kimber said. “There are also cases when it could be used for orthopedic surgeries, especially spine surgeries and tumor removals.”
With these new capabilities and improvements, Sanford Health is reinforcing its commitment to bring world-class orthopedic care to Sioux Falls. When the orthopedic hospital was designed, creating a positive patient experience was considered a priority for the organization.
“The likelihood that you will need orthopedic care at some point in your lifetime is exceedingly high, and if you don’t, your family members probably will,” Kimber said. “I think this hospital will create a better experience for the patients that visit us.”
Part of the hospital’s seamless experience comes from its location. Situated in the middle of Sanford Health’s main campus, its proximity to other clinics and specialties gives patients the ability to easily move from one appointment to the next.
Another way convenience has been elevated at the new facility is through the Highpoint Hotel. Located on the top floors of the hospital, this hotel offers preoperative and postoperative patients, as well as other guests, high-end amenities in a comfortable environment.
“A lot of our patients come from rural communities, and there aren’t many places to stay next to our campus,” Daniel said.
“Having this hotel means people can spend their nights before and after surgery here without having to drive on the day of their procedure or discharge.”
Dr. Nathan Skelley, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, said the new orthopedic hospital benefits both physicians and their patients.
“Our physicians and staff work every day to deliver compassionate, cutting-edge and comprehensive orthopedic care,” Skelley said. “With this investment from Sanford Health, we now have a facility that helps subspecialists work to their highest ability, as well as train the next generation of surgeons.”
Sanford Orthopedic Hospital is the newest landmark in Sioux Falls, and it signifies Sanford Health’s commitment to the community. Through its innovations, it will elevate orthopedic care for patients and their families.
“Sanford Health isn’t just a regional leader in orthopedic care,” Skelley said. “It’s a national leader, and it continues to bring in the latest and greatest technology and innovations.” Read the article on SiouxFalls.Business.
