Take a look at the new addition to the Minnehaha County Jail
It’s been a year of juggling.
Since the county’s corrections center caught fire last year and forced an unexpected influx of inmates over to the jail, staff have had to balance housing and transferring inmates, all while building a hefty addition to the jail.
Now, there’s some closure in sight.
Inmates will soon be able to occupy the fifth floor addition to the Minnehaha County Jail. County leaders are ready for the extra beds to help alleviate the sudden 80 extra inmates the jail had to take on when a cigarette butt started a fire that closed the corrections center, a facility that was predicted to be inadequate to house inmates for much longer, anyway. County leaders are hoping the floor addition will eliminate the need to transfer inmates to other jails. Read the full story on the Argus Leader’s website.
